Added review by Shane:

I’ve used a wooden Sawyer paddle and this is my second paddle. I’m 6′1″ and had it initially cut to 82″. I experienced some shoulder pain. Perhaps it was the switch from wood to Carbon? I decided to cut the Shaka Pu’u down to 80″ and my pain has subsided. I use the paddle for both flat water cruising and surfing. I feel, in my limited experience with paddles, that this paddle really shines in the surf. I can accelerate fast and the light weight of the carbon really helps make the recovery portion of the stroke efficient. The other thing I like is that the back of the blade has a tapered edge. In theory, this helps the paddle plane on the surface of the water when leaning on it for a turn. I have some mastic tap to protect the edge so this might be minimizing the edges intent some. However, I have never had it dive under the water when surfing. I know others that have this problem with other brands of paddles.

Overall, I love this paddle and I think the low surface area is a great choice for me.
