Right after Ke Nalu launches February 25 with our Board and Paddle Showcase Issue, a new high-style Stand Up magazine is launching in early March. I’m stoked. (click the pages to see them full size). Nothing will legitimize this sport faster than a sharp looking magazine, and this one looks very cool. I’m a sucker for Surfer’s Journal. Usually I’m a reader and don’t care that much about pictures, but I can sit and stare at Surfer’s Journal for hours. I think it’s because the photography pulls you right into the scene.
I’m not good surfer (yet) but when I see a great picture, I’m right there, feeling the ripples on the wave face, fighting for balance and speed. This magazine looks like it will do the same thing, only with a paddle.
The layout is clean, lots of photos, and I like the editorial direction
The publisher is Clay Feeter, who also publishes Windsurf Journal
Clay says he’s a surfer first, and it shows
But he’s also paying attention to the flatwater and downwinder aspect of SUP
That’s a smart move, the surfing aspect of SUP will grow on it’s own, it’s the touring and flatwater aspect that represents the biggest growth opportunity, and people will need to be educated to those possibilities
Whoever is building these mockup seems to like the photo of this blonde. I don’t know why…
These are just a few paves–twenty six out of the 116 I understand will be the published size.
If these drafts are an accurate indication of the overall book, I think this is going to be prime coffee table stuff.
I seem to have misplaced a page–I know there was one that showed a guy fishing! Oh well, here’s some links to the full PDFs
www.standupzone.com/1.pdf
www.standupzone.com/2.pdf
Looks like most of the well known builders and paddle-makers will be represented
Overall a very easy layout to read. It’s inspirational, I need to bring more of that design sense to Kenalu
Arrggh, it’s a Pirate. Always wanted to go fishing with Mr. Buffet.
