Hey gang,

I live in Delray Beach, FL (South Florida) which offers a wide variety of paddling options; lakes, canals, flat ocean days, and waves. I have two boards (12' 9:Fish Orca and a 11' “AA” Jimmy Lewis) that are very different; one for distance paddling and one for paddle surfing.

I bought a C4 Waterman Carbon SUP Paddle (8.5″ blade width) and don't seem to get enough out of it whether paddling either board!? I'm 6' 1″ 225lbs (athletic) and have cut the paddle to 6' 8″ in length.

  • Did I choose a paddle that doesn't have a wide enough blade?
  • Should I have gone +8″ instead of +7″, added to my height for total paddle length?
  • Does anyone have any suggestions on various paddles or techniques that will help with speed?

I've been paddling for years (canoes and kayaks) and feel that my stroke is efficient, but I just don't feel like I'm getting the most out of my paddle…..

Any suggestions, comments, questions are greatly appreciated.

Your paddle might be a little short. An 8.5 is a good width, you might just work some on technique. Here's some things to try.

Don't paddle with your arms, they should be straight but not locked. You paddle with your shoulders, pushing down with the top hand. Bend forward some as you put the paddle in and bend your knees a little, get the blade all the way in the water and start moving it a little before you put the steam to it. You want the paddle completely covered with water. Pull back hard to just your feet, and as you get close to your feet rock your weight up, straightening your knees and pushing the board forward with your feet. Let the blade glide back but don't put power into it once it passes your feet. The shaft should be as vertical as you can get it, and the blade should be half under the board with the shaft nearly touching the rail.

If you watch the really fast canoe paddlers you'll see that they take short strokes, pulling just back to their knees, but they paddle fast and smooth. Some of those guys just fly in sprintsand distance racing.

Hmmm. I forgot you said you were a proficient paddler, maybe you should be giving ME tips.
